1. Give definitions

Define your objective(s)

First, you need to define the objective of your study. This should be summarized in one sentence like :
  • To find risk factors for infection after a hip surgery or
  • To assess the efficacy of a new drug for the treatment of hypertension in patients older than 80 years old

Define your hypothesis

The hypothesis should also be summarized in one sentence.
  • H : the new drug is more efficient than a placebo for the treatment of hypertension in patients older than 80 years old or
  • H : the new drug is as efficient as the reference treatment for hypertension in patients older than 80 years old

Define your population

Who are your patients and for which patients your study is aimed at ? This is very important because it will have consequences on :
  • Your inclusion criteria, which will be defined according to your population definition
  • Your results, that can be generalized only to a population which is similar to the patients of your study

2. Choose your study variables

THINK A LONG TIME ABOUT YOUR VARIABLES before starting your study.
These will determinate the rigor (and therefore scientific level), the power, and the possible conclusions of your study.
